Potato Starts

I had a thought this morning, and was wondering if anyone had tried this.

Can you start Potatoes early, inside, and then transplant them in the spring?

It would give me more time to be able to plant twice in the year, instead of once. Giving me a better chance to have a successful second harvest.

Regular potatoes or sweet potatoes? Or both? I know you can do this with sweet potatoes (either getting slips started from whole sweet potatoes, or keeping vine cuttings going through winter) but I have never grown “regular” potatoes.

Me neither. I’ve been growing potatoes for years, but always outside.

      Guess I’ll be experimenting! 🙂

      Curious minds want to know…

Your biggest obstacle would be damaging the roots when transplanting. If you used a biodegradable pot that could be transplanted along with the plant (without removing it), you would stand a better chance. In my experience, peat pots don’t actually break down, but CowPots do (made from compressed cow manure). You could also try making your own out of newspapers, but I have never personally done that. It’s an interesting idea, and I may give it a try myself this year.

Than you. I’ll look into the pots made with manure.

Where do you find candles that will burn all night?

Try candlesto put on a grave, with all do respect they are cheap and long burning hours. We use them as being prepared to, just in case.

Oh boy. I’m trying to wrap my head around lugging all those bins outside. Lol

I’m going to start them in 4″ Cow Pots. Then put them out in February. I’m working on a mini greenhouse to go over the 5 foot tank I’ll grow them in. Then use an inverted clay pot and candle to keep it warm if the temperature gets frigid. A friend of mine kept her greens alive, with those clay pots, during our sub zero temps, under a low tunnel. It was amazing, to say the least. 🙂
