Overwintering Onions or Garlic?

Good evening, I’m wondering does anyone in North Texas (zone 8a) overwinters and onion sets or garlic in their raised beds? I have a fall garden that will go until our first frost date in mid-November, and was wondering if anyone has tried to do this with garlic or onions. I’d appreciate any insight you have.

I put my garlic in around late October/early November and harvest in May or June. As long as you get a little bit of green growth before consistant freezing temps you should be ok. I start onions from seed in early spring and harvest during summer no problem.

Thanks. Sounds like I should start some garlic in my seed starting systems and plant in the garden as I remove those plants.

We are in zone 8b. I plant garlic in October and harvest May/June. For the first time, I will be planting bunching onion seeds this year in October/November. Will see how these do.

Well I can tell you it doesnt work in Mid MIssouri unless you are looking to make seed. I did that last year and thats all I got was seed heads on the onions. Oh and I discovered candy onions only keep about 8 weeks after harvest. They all molded.

Garlic grows over winter so fall is the time to plant. Onions need two growing seasons to go to seed if I remember correctly. Which of course means them overwintering.

6a/b here. I am planting garlic this week, after a week or two I will mulch heavily with a V down to where the row is, and as the season gets colder, I will increase the center row mulch. Happy bulbing!

I was able to put in garlic about a week and a half ago and it has been going great.

Never grown garlic before but I’ve planted 3 bulbs worth of cloves in my beds this month (purple variety from the grocery store just as an experiment) and they are mostly all already coming up in just a few days. Mild winters here in south TX (normally) so will see how these do.
