It got down to minus 6, with a strong wind blowing. AND I discovered that my emergency hen house heater was simply not strong enough. It took me far too long to figure out that there was nothing wrong with the settings, which meant that I was out swapping heaters at 11 at night.

Now I know that if you crowd the chickens a bit that no supplemental heat would be needed, but I only have 5 birds in a 12 x 10 structure. And so my birds needed a bit of supplemental heat in order to keep the inside temps in the teens. I would have preferred it to be 10 degrees WARMER, but my space heaters are simply not designed for minus 6!

We had -50 wind chill and -18 temps last thursday/friday in NE Nebraska. Expecting a high of 38 today. Will feel balmy.

Here in Middle TN we got to -20 wind chill. I’ve never seen wind like that before so constant and strong. It was definitely frigid for us. TVA ordered rolling blackouts. They cut our house 3 times. Hot water froze during that because we were still asleep the first time. We did have our water running. The pipe busted under my sink and flooded the house. We had just enough pipe on hand to fix it thank the good Lord. Our city water tanks went dry due to equipment failures. Pressure went to a trickle for us while some had none. We are still under a boil advisory until Dec 31. The city didn’t offer any free bottled or jug water to anyone. Price gauging people at the gas stations. I’m thankful we were prepared enough to not have to go find any to buy. Had 2 backups for heat. Thankful, Grateful and Blessed!

Today we got a fantastic break in fargo nd. It was 31 degrees. Last week the windchill had gone to -38. This is such odd weather to have in Dec. I expect it in the middle to the late part of January, but not now. Makes me wonder how the rest of the winter will go.

It got pretty cold here in North Texas. The central heat died the first day the cold blew in (which apparently is going to cost $1100 to repair), and it got down to 40 degrees downstairs by the front door, but we kept it 50 degrees upstairs with space heaters. We kept the oven going in the kitchen through those cold days. There are 2 propane heaters downstairs that kept running. Our electric bill was running us about $35 a day keeping those space heaters going. I wish we had a fireplace or wood burning stove for back up here. There were 3 fireplaces in this house that were torn apart before my parents bought it 25 years ago.

Here in central south Dakota we have been pounded with 2-3 feet of snow in the last couple of weeks. We had two days of -50 and unfortunately lost our two best sows and had another abort. We are staying positive as we have 3 gilts ready to breed and several more in the next few months. The decision we are struggling with is weather to castrate our current boar or find him new sows. He is 2.5/3 yes old, through a great babies, and is a big baby himself most of the time. Time will tell.
