Cold or Frigid?
-
Here in eastern Tennessee we got down to 9 this morning. All car doors were frozen, all chickens waterers were, but the chickens made it👏🏼. Currently it’s 6 and no telling what it will get down to tonight. We are in a little valley so it always gets colder than predicted.
Hot water pipes froze, but they are pex so not broken. We are heating water on the wood stove. The wood furnace and small stove in the living room are having a hard time keeping up. Just have to fill more often. We were threatened with rolling blackouts, but haven’t experienced one yet. We have a backup portable generator and fuel if necessary.

We’re at 13° with a windchill of -2°, here in SE PA. All snuggled up. Stay safe, everyone.
Merry Christmas 🎄

frigid here in SW Missouri…yesterday Thursday temps -9* wind chill -35* and the winds were howling…I placed deep shavings into the chicken coops and kept them inside…the goats had shelter and used it even during the day…horses had blankets on, but stayed outside chomping on hay…most of the cows stayed outside eating their hay too…our dog stays in his igloo, but because he is short haired I brought him inside our basement…today temps rose to 5* and the wind had slowed down…all is well…no frozen pipes…our UTV started…yippee, but our diesel P/U won’t keep running…thinking the fuel has gelled?
I totally forgot to mention I am experimenting with an unheated greenhouse…it was 12* at 6a.m. but, as soon as the sun came out it rose quickly to 42*…the outside temps were -5* real temps so that’s not too bad…I am hoping fruit trees that can’t take 10* and lower might make it next year in this greenhouse with a small amount of heat.

It was around 11° with windchill at 5° here in Jones county. Our water has been running for 24 hours to keep things from freezing.

Danny, you were so so right. If you will get wind, you will get a LOT of wind, if you will get cold, you will get a LOT of cold, if you will get snow, you will get a LOT of snow. Oh my word, this is like a rough February in Ohio. We sometimes have a white Christmas, but the ZT is in the neighbor’s garage, and the chickshaw is shoehorned into the shed. The chickens are protesting, but what can you do? -24 wind chill is no place for a 5# bird. They’d be a frozen doorstop in no time flat. 15K ppl in the Central Ohio area without power. God has spared us, and the woodburner insert is going great guns. 28 one week old quail are in a tote in the kitchen humming along in greased grooves. I cooked my own cushaw squash, gold beets, carrots, along with store bought spices quinoa and kale. Savory and delicious and warmed my body and spirit. So happy you and Wanda are out of the thick of it. I can’t even imagine Montana or Minnesota, never mind the Dakotas. Those folks are made of sterner stuff.
This is the time of year to read Luke chapter 2, and know the true meaning of Christmas. “In the countryside, there were shepherds, abiding in the fields, and keeping watch over their flocks by night. And an angel of the Lord appeared before them, and the glory of the Lord shone all around them, and they were sore afraid. The angel said, fear not, for I bring you good tidings of great joy that shall be to all people. For unto us is born this day in the city of David, a Savior, ’tis Christ the Lord.” Probably my favorite promise in the whole Bible. Be well, do good work, and keep in touch.

Today in Massachusetts, at 8AM it was 4 degrees outside. Two hours later it’s now 7 degrees. Wind is 11 mph. Feels like -7. Yesterday it rained all day and took all the snow away, but by sundown it had snowed again. Just a dusting. This weather in NewEngland is crazy as always. Our dog was excited, until his toes got too cold and headed back in quicker than he normally would. We are used to this cold weather up here. We always dress in layers during the winters. Thermals, hats, scarfs, and wrap in blankets.

Hey there we are in Massachusetts too. What part are you in if you don’t mind me asking? We’re in the south shore area.
-
Central Mass and as North as you can go, near the NH line.
-
I grew up on the NorthShore. Moved out hear 28 yrs ago and plan to move south in the next year, if all goes well.

We were frigid!
-8 with a windchill of -37. I live in North Central Kansas. My, and your, friends East of me had it worse than we did.
Too cold for my blood. Ready to retire somewhere warmer.

Being born and raised in Maine, I’m used to being totally covered in snow up to our necks or more, icicles the height of a 7 year old, power outages, opening the stove, boiling water to have a bath, so this isn’t nothing new in terms of cold, but it is weird being in Massachusetts this year and having zero snow, like all winter where we are. Controlled manipulated weather that’s why. Anyways, we stood out in the cold today around 5:30-6:00 and it was 15 degrees but feels like -1. After 30 or so minutes my fingers were numb and had to go back to the car. Now at 8:30 it’s about 12-13 degrees, wind gusts 6-13 mph. Nothing out of the ordinary here, minus not having snow, which I’m totally fine with. We have 0 degree sleeping bags, candles, tactical flashlights, etc, just incase because we are on the grid. But hopefully not for long!!!! Lord willing!!!! I am so glad to know the Good Lord. I can’t have a fire, so I’m putting one up on YouTube. Got to make the best of what you got now to get where you’re going to go! Amen!

Yesterday we made it down to -18⁰ in Northern Colorado, with windchill at around -40⁰. That was cold. Today is much more temperate. It felt amazingly warm to venture out in positive double digits.

In Southwestern Michigan the temps got down to -15 wind chill. We’re not far from Lake Michigan and it’s been snowing almost non stop since Wednesday night, we’ve gotten between 2 and 3 feet.
We covered the chicken coop with plastic to help keep the extreme winds at bay. They’re refusing to come out of the hen house, so we stuck their food and water up there. We’re checking on them and their water regularly and they seem to be taking it all in stride. They’re warm and clucking happily.

It was very, very cold here in Middle Tennessee! Our low got down to -1 and it was windy, but I don’t know what the windchill factor was.
We had ice and some snow (maybe an inch and a half). Our chickens made it through and were happy to see me in the morning.
We did have a rolling blackout which was supposed to be for 15 minutes but was around 40.
All-in-all, things were good. Stay warm everyone!!
