Be a Berean about all things despite appearances.
Some Christian podcasters visited the scene of this movement and reported despite great numbers and emotions, no one was giving the Gospel. It was also stated that actually there was not much Biblical teaching at all. Don’t know if true, but data.
The current movie The Jesus Revolution is getting lots of airplay. It is a highly sanitized version of events of the Jesus Revival with everyone being portrayed in a good light, especially Chuck Smith. Ronnie Frisbee was in the center of the Hippie Movement in CA and was sadly involved in the homosexual lifestyle for years. (Tragically he had been sexually abused as a kid and eventually died of AIDS.) He was married for a time to Connie and they were together during the Calvary Chapel heyday.
Someone recently interviewed Ronnie Frisbee’s widow.. She stated no one asked her anything about the movie. After viewing the film, she said that it was 99% fiction. Connie stated that during their time at Chuck Smith’s church, they had all these people coming in and out of their home and were working non-stop, but that they were so poor, they had to dumpster dive to eat. When they approached Smith wanting marriage counseling, he told them to just go back to work. Chuck paid an assistant to them, but didn’t pay them. It was so bad, they moved to FL. Put a happy face on that behavior.
Regarding the lead actor who portrays Frisbee- I can barely sit through an episode of The Chosen for their completely fictionalized account and departure from events recorded in scripture. Making Matthew the tax collector autistic…why? There was a scene where Mary Magdalene was shown to have a gambling problem, which she relapsed into in a later episode…. not one shred of evidence for that or that she ever reverted to any previous behavior. The creator’s license is not appropriate as it intentionally deceives.
My position is always take these big movements at face value/neutrally until further research is done. The other side can cause all kinds of false revivals, healings, etc. to deceive the brethren. Test the spirit.
